چکیده

Using a data set on more than 300 UK pension funds' asset holdings, this paper provides a systematic investigation of the performance of managed portfolios across multiple asset classes. We ̄nd evidence of slow mean reversion in the funds' portfolio weights towards a common, time-varying strategic asset allocation. We also ̄nd surprisingly little cross-sectional variation in the average ex post returns arising from the strategic asset allocation, market timing and security selection decisions of the fund managers. Strategic asset allocation accounts for most of the time-series variation in portfolio returns, while market timing and asset selection appear to have been far less important.

A Defined Benefit Pension Fund ALM Model through Multistage Stochastic Programming

We consider an asset-liability management (ALM) problem for a defined benefit pension fund (PF). The PF manager is assumed to follow a maximal fund valuation problem facing an extended set of risk factors:  due to the longevity of the    PF members, the inflation affecting salaries in real terms and future incomes, interest rates and market factors affecting jointly the PF liability and asset p...

Asset Allocation in Finnish Pension Funds

This paper empirically examines the strategic asset allocation and the asset/liability issues in the Finnish defined benefit pension funds. The results indicate that there is a relationship between the liability structure and the asset allocation. While pension funds with younger participants have more equity exposure, more mature pension funds have more fixed income investments. Wide dispersio...

Some Notes on the Dynamics and Optimal Control of Stochastic Pension Fund Models in Continuous Time

This paper discusses the modelling and control of pension funds. A continuous-time stochastic pension fund model is proposed in which there are n risky assets plus the risk-free asset as well as randomness in the level of benefit outgo. We consider Markov control strategies which optimise over the contribution rate and over the range of possible asset-allocation strategies. For a general (not n...

Optimal Dynamic Asset Allocation for Defined-Contribution Pension Plans

We develop an optimal asset allocation model for the accumulation phase of a definedcontribution pension plan in the presence of non-hedgeable salary risk. The model considers a policyholder who each period, t, contributes a constant proportion, π, of his salary, S(t), to a personal pension fund, W(t). At the time of retirement, T , the fund is converted into an annuity paying W (T)/a(T) each p...

Can Large Pension Funds Beat the Market?

We assess and analyze the three components of active management (asset allocation, market timing and security selection) in the performance of pension funds. Security selection explains most of the differences in pension fund returns. Large pension funds in our sample on average provide value to their clients after accounting for all investment-related costs, both before and after risk-adjustin...
